What is the purpose of anointing oil?

The use of anointing oil can be found throughout the Old Bible. Aaron and his sons were anointed with oil when they were consecrated to serve as priests for God (Exodus 30:30). The people of Israel were given specific ingredients that were to be blended together to make the holy anointing oil (Exodus 30:23-25). The oil was not to be poured on the body of any ordinary person, and it was to be treated as holy (Exodus 30:32).

Oil was used to anoint kings of the Old Testament. Saul, along with the future King David were both anointed with olive oil at different times by the prophet Samuel (1 Samuel 10:1, 1 Samuel 16:13).
