The Story Behind Anointing Oils

By mony somech / April 14, 2020

What is the purpose of anointing oil?

In Biblical times, anointing something or someone with oil was a sacred event. In Psalm 23 is written “You anointed my head with oil; my cup overflows”, and now days in Christian tradition, anointing is an important practice to heal the sick or designate a ceremonial meaning.

We know this subject is important to God because the words anoint, anointed, and anointing appear in more than 150 Spirit-inspired Bible verses, including 22 New Testament Scriptures. Indeed, the English word anoint derives from the ancient Latin inunctus, meaning “smear with oil.”

People would anoint with olive oil to sanctify the item or the person to be set apart and dedicated to God (Exodus 30:29), to be dedicated to serve God; to be endowed with enabling gifts and grace; to be divinely designated, inaugurated, or chosen for some purpose.

Who uses anointing oils?

It's not dedicated only for high priests and kings. It is also used to seek healing and grace for someone sick or frail.

What the Bible Says About anointing oil?

The use of anointing oil can be found throughout the Old Bible. Aaron and his sons were anointed with oil when they were consecrated to serve as priests for God (Exodus 30:30). The people of Israel were given specific ingredients that were to be blended together to make the holy anointing oil (Exodus 30:23-25). The oil was not to be poured on the body of any ordinary person, and it was to be treated as holy (Exodus 30:32).

Oil was used to anoint kings of the Old Testament. Saul, along with the future King David were both anointed with olive oil at different times by the prophet Samuel (1 Samuel 10:1, 1 Samuel 16:13). In (Psalms 89:20), the Bible says, “I have found my servant David. I have anointed him with my holy oil.”

Anointing people with oil who are sick is referred to twice in the New Testament. (Mark 6:13) says, “And they cast out many demons and healed many sick people, anointing them with olive oil.”

The Scripture that speaks directly to the New Testament Church of today regarding the use of anointing oil is (James 5:14-15). It says, “Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the Church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.” And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well.”

What is the power of anointing oil? How anointing oil work?

The Anointing oil is an emblem employ by Jesus Christ and the Old Testament Prophets and Priest to administer the power of God. The Holy and consecrated oil is a medium by which the Holy Spirit is released into another person or instrument.
Everyone, that is every Christian, is allowed to use Anointing Oil for personal use and for use in their family. For example, a man may anoint his wife, parents may anoint their children.
As with all other spiritual tools, the real power comes from God. Without faith, anointing oil will not have any positive effect. You can use oil to help strengthen and demonstrate your faith, but you cannot use it to replace faith.

There is no healing power in the oil itself, the power is from God. Even so, it is having faith in God and obedience to his Word that can and does bring supernatural healings. Many who have obeyed this verse and had elders of the Church anoint them with oil as they were prayed for can testify of the healing miracles that have come from simply doing what the Bible says. Faith and obedience in God and his Word are a powerful combination!
