Un Shofar est un instrument naturel fabriqué à partir de corne animale qui est utilisé depuis les temps bibliques. Le shofar est mentionné fréquemment dans la Bible hébraïque. C'est un son de shofar qui émanait du nuage épais sur le mont Sinaï et faisait trembler les Israélites d'admiration (Exode 19-20). Le shofar était utilisé pour annoncer les fêtes (Psaumes 81:4), pour sonner le Nouvel An (Lévitique 7:9), en procession avec l'Arche de l'Alliance (II Samuel 6:15, I Chroniques 15:28), pour signifier la guerre (Josué 6:4, Juges 3:27), et tout simplement comme un bel instrument de musique (Psaumes 98:6, 47:5).
