La Cruz
La cruz es una figura geométrica que consta de dos líneas o barras perpendiculares entre sí, que dividen una o dos de las líneas por la mitad. Las líneas suelen correr vertical y horizontalmente; si corren oblicuamente, el diseño se denomina técnicamente saltire, aunque los brazos de un saltire no necesitan encontrarse en ángulo recto.
La cruz es uno de los símbolos humanos más antiguos y ha sido utilizada por muchas religiones, sobre todo el cristianismo.
La palabra cruz proviene en última instancia del latín crux, un dispositivo de tortura romano utilizado para la crucifixión. La palabra se introdujo en inglés en el siglo X como el término para el instrumento de la torturante ejecución de Jesús como se describe en el Nuevo Testamento, reemplazando gradualmente la palabra anterior rood. Crux posiblemente se deriva del fenicio.
Según la Enciclopedia Católica, cruz no proviene de crux sino del latín curio, "tormentar".
